Description
Built between 1984 and 1997 under Nicolae Ceaușescu’s communist regime, the Palace of Parliament (Palatul Parlamentului) is one of the largest and most extravagant buildings in the world — second only to the Pentagon in size.
Spanning more than 350,000 m² and over 1,000 rooms, the palace is a showcase of Romanian craftsmanship: marble stairs, gold-leaf ceilings, Bohemian crystal chandeliers, and handmade oak carvings — all made from domestic materials.
Today it houses Romania’s Parliament, as well as the National Museum of Contemporary Art and several official government halls still used for major political events and international summits.
Guided tours (available in multiple languages) take visitors through grand halls, ceremonial rooms, and viewing balconies that reveal both the building’s monumental scale and its historical symbolism.
Outside, the palace overlooks Constituției Square, one of Europe’s largest open plazas, often used for concerts, parades, and festivals. Nearby, you can enjoy a walk through Izvor Park or dine at riverside cafés along Splaiul Independenței.
